On 2nd April 2026, GREL’s Corporate Affairs Department hosted the Western Regional Security Council (REGSEC), led by the Western Regional Minister, Hon. Joseph Nelson, together with the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS), represented by its Director of Operations, Colonel Dominic Buah, on an inspection tour of heavily affected plantations—ED2, ED3, and ED6. The Ahanta West Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Ebenezer Aidoo, was also part of the delegation.
The visit formed part of ongoing efforts to combat illegal mining (galamsey) and offered officials the opportunity to witness firsthand the extent of destruction within the plantations.
Corporate Affairs Manager, Mr. Perry Acheampong, highlighted the growing threat posed by illegal miners, noting the continued destruction of trees to expand mining sites. He appealed to security agencies to ensure offenders are not only arrested but also prosecuted to prevent repeat offences.
Hon. Joseph Nelson reaffirmed Government’s commitment to intensifying the fight against galamsey. He announced plans to establish three military bases in Ahanta West, Ellembelle, and Amenfi East, alongside increased patrols, particularly at night, to deter illegal activities.
He further warned perpetrators to desist immediately, stressing that Government will take decisive action against any continued encroachment.
The tour underscores the strengthened collaboration between GREL, REGSEC, and NAIMOS to protect plantations and safeguard the environment.
Following the visit, NAIMOS undertook a series of operations over the Easter holidays to clear illegal mining activities within the ED3 plantation, demonstrating swift action in response to the issues identified during the tour.
