A Child’s Hands Are Meant to Hold Books, Not Burdens

Behind every child, forced to work instead of learning is a dream silently waiting to be saved. A child who should be holding a pencil may be carrying a burden too heavy for their little hands; a child who should be turning the pages of a book may be spending their days trapped in labour. Every lost lesson is a stolen opportunity, and every forgotten dream is a call for us to act.

As part of this year’s World Day against Child Labour commemoration, Ghana Rubber Estate Limited (GREL) engaged basic schools across its operational area communities to raise awareness and reinforce the importance of protecting children’s rights. The engagement sought to remind every child that education is their right, their dreams matter, and they deserve the opportunity to learn, grow, and build a brighter future. Through shared stories, key messages, and meaningful conversations, the event highlighted the need for collective action towards a world where no child is forced to exchange the classroom for harsh labour.

The commemoration was graced by many dignitaries including Nana Kwesi Agyeman IX, Paramount Chief of Lower Dixcove and ACLANGO Chairman; Nana Owontuahene I, Chief of Dadwen; Nana Kwadu III; Elders of the Dadwen community; Mr. Clement Peprah, Western Regional Labour Officer; Mr. Ebenezer Ebissah, Circuit Supervisor for Axim North; Mr. Kobina Acquaye, NOM – South Estates; Mr. Jude Fiifi Cudjoe, Community Relations Manager; Mr. Peter Atoura, Community Relations Manager; and other staff of GREL. Their presence reinforced the shared responsibility of communities, institutions, and individuals in protecting children and ensuring that every child has the chance to pursue their dreams. GREL remains committed to supporting initiatives that promote children’s rights and create a future where children’s hands hold books, not burdens.
